Tunisia Main – Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a dish that has most likely appeared on a brunch menu near you! It is typically served in a skillet, however we did not have an oven-safe pan — it works just as well in a roasting dish if this is all you have.

We used a recipe from Globally Flavored, which was very straightforward and packed with flavour.

Shakshuka ingredients

The base is a rich, spiced tomato and pepper sauce — onion and garlic are softened first, then peppers added before the tomatoes, harissa, cumin and paprika go in to create a deeply flavoured sauce. This is left to simmer until thickened.

Sauce simmering

Wells are then made in the sauce with the back of a spoon and eggs cracked directly in. The pan is covered and the eggs gently cooked in the residual heat until the whites are just set but the yolks remain runny.

Shakshuka final

Served straight from the dish with crusty bread for mopping up the sauce, this was an absolute triumph. Simple, deeply satisfying and bursting with flavour.

Let us know if you give this a go — and feel free to add extra harissa if you like the heat!
