Japan Starter – Hosomaki

For Japan week we knew sushi had to make an appearance! We’re big lovers of sushi when made by the professionals, so we wanted to give it a go ourselves.

Sushi ingredients laid out

To keep our sushi as authentic as possible, we opted for hosomaki which only uses one ingredient in the middle of the roll. We alternated between avocado and cucumber as our fillings. The sushi rice was soaked in water for about an hour, then brought to the boil until all the water had been absorbed, then seasoned with white wine vinegar and mirin rice wine.

Then it was time for the fun bit — rolling the sushi! We took out our newly-purchased makisu (the bamboo mat) and gave it a good go.

Rolling sushi with a makisu

We won’t lie, this took us a couple of attempts to get right, but it turned out ok in the end! Everything was as delicious as we expected and we fully intend to make this again.
