Canada Drink – Caesar

We started Canada week not with a traditional starter, but with Canada’s national drink — the Caesar! This week was also a special one for us as we had special guests (aka our 2020 Covid bubble friends) in the form of actual real-life Canadians for an authenticity check on all the food. Heather (@thehealthyhighlander) was our mixologist for the day, and also sourced the magic ingredient of Clamato juice.

Caesar ingredients

This cocktail is definitely a meal in itself, and is probably best as a drink at brunch for hair of the dog! The mixture of ingredients is similar to a Bloody Mary, but with a bit of a twist.

To make a Caesar:

  1. Choose a tall glass and give it a celery salt rim
  2. Add ice to the glass and a single or double of vodka (we went for a double)
  3. Add a little lemon juice, followed by a couple of drops of tabasco
Step One Step Two Step Three
  1. Add a couple of drops of Worcestershire sauce and top up with Clamato juice (but not all the way!)

(In case you were wondering, Clamato juice is tomato juice with clam broth and spices. We know, it’s weird)

  1. Add a little pepper to the top of the cocktail and give it a little taste. Feel free to add more Worcestershire sauce or tabasco, dependent on your taste.

The Garnish

In Canada, there are infinite combinations of what the Caesar can be garnished with, but we opted for olives, cucumber, tomatoes and cornichons. Chop these up to your liking and make a large garnish skewer, along with a stick of celery and a slice of lemon.

Caesar ingredients

We won’t lie, this is one of the strangest things we’ve ever tried, but if you’re a fan of Bloody Marys we think it’s likely that you would enjoy the umami-esque flavour of a Caesar. They also look fantastic if you’re hoping to show off fancy cocktails!

We are very curious to hear your thoughts — let us know if you give this a go!
